How it spread

Trace the origin

NewProfilePic launched in April. Portraits spread on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram in May as the owner reported No. 1 app ranks. Spyware rumors triggered press warnings and fact-checks; the developer asked users to share a rebuttal.
